Tips for New Students

Tips for New Students

Being in a new school is challenging.  Students must adjust to many new things all at one time including a community, school building and procedures, teachers, classmates, and curriculum.  Following are some tips that we hope will assist you in becoming a happy successful Mill Creek Hawk.

  • Keep an open mind.  Being a new student gives you many new opportunities for success.
  • Be patient.  Give yourself time to adjust.  There is a lot to learn about Mill Creek High School and a successful transition into the Mill Creek family will take time.
  • Reach out to other students.  Start small by saying "hello" to several new people each day.  Ask for directions or information.
  • If you see someone standing alone, go over and introduce yourself.  He/She may also be a new student who needs a friend.
  • Talk with your teachers, counselor, and administrator.  They know many people and are willing to help you get acquainted.
  • Don't take it personally if someone chooses not to carry on a converstaion with you.  Keep trying to initiate converstation with other students.
  • Join a school club or activity.  Meeting times and locations are given during the morning announcements.  Your counselor will give you a complete list of activities, athletics and their sponsors.
  • Participate in a new student group sponsored by the counseling office.  Ask your counselor when the next one will begin.
  • Be sure to keep up with your school work and remember to ask your teachers for help when you don't understand.  All Mill Creek teachers are available for after school tutoring.  Please check with your teacher to establish a time to work together.
  • If you hit snags during your adjustment to Mill creek, please schedule an appointment to talk with your counselor.
  • Make a conscious choice to be happy and fit in at Mill Creek and then work each day to achieve that goal.
